The Community Youth Council

Shining Star: A Night to Inspire

On February 24, we hosted a memorable event at the University of Texas Etter-Harbin Alumni Center. Shining Star: A Night to Inspire honored the 2019 Community Youth Council (CYC), a group of Austin-area juniors who volunteer their time to support the programs and services we offer. This inspiring group of young philanthropists provide much needed hands-on support to the daily operations of The Settlement Home. From serving a holiday dinner to their peers in foster care to helping with a booth at our annual Games Day to completing beautification projects around The Settlement Home’s campus, these bright youth are making The Settlement Home a better place one volunteer hour at a time.

We also honored KW Cares and KW Kids Can with the Community Leadership Award for the generous support they have provided to the community. Their dedication to providing aid to Keller Williams agents in need and fostering an entrepreneurial spirit in young people is inspiring.

Singer-songwriter and Real Life, Real Music founder Kyle Hutton shared an encouraging message with guests about the impact that their support makes on an organization like The Settlement Home for Children. Kyle was adopted at a young age and told the CYC members how impactful their volunteer work is to their peers in foster care. Every summer, Kyle hosts a songwriting workshop for Settlement Home residents, which gives them the unique opportunity to write and record an original song, inspired by their life experiences. Kyle shared a sample of one of these songs from last summer which showed the power of music and its healing nature.

The event was a spearheaded by Shining Star Event Co-Chairs Mary Pfluger and Cynthia Selman. We appreciate their hard work to make it a success.
