Pieces of History

The Settlement Home has a rich history, 99 years to be exact! In those years, we have evolved from a day nursery into a Residential Treatment Center, Group Home Program, Transitional Living Program and a Foster & Adoption Program.

We enjoy learning about our history from those who experienced it. This summer, we had visits from two people who retold stories about their time at The Home.

Carol Ann Meeks Harper actually grew up in the Zimmerman Home, which is now our Main Office. Her family sold the home and property to The Settlement Club in the late 1960s. She stopped by The Home to share old photos and her childhood memories.

Carol Harper lived in the historic farm house in the 1940s. Her family later sold it to The Settlement Club.

We also had another visit from a man who lived at The Settlement Home in 1938. At that time, it was located on 37th Street and served boys and girls residentially. He recalled fond memories of his time at The Home and the Waco State School.

Bobby lived at The Home in the 1930s.

We enjoy hearing from people with a connection to our history and we thank Carol and Bobby for visiting us to share their memories.
