Volunteer Spotlight: Lillian

Lillian Kilventon is a volunteer at Scarbrough cottage. Lillian heard about The Settlement Home from her mother and also through Settlement Club member Ann Brown. She was looking for an opportunity to give of her time and make a difference.
Lillian has been a wonderful resource for the residents of Scarbrough Cottage in the Residential Treatment Center. She brings unique and fun activities the cottage to do each time she visits.

“I try to think back to when I was a teenager and what things I enjoyed doing like nails, face masks, games, and girl time. I pay attention when I hear one of the girls mention something she enjoys doing, and I think of a way to bond with her or turn it into a group activity,” Lillian says.

Lillian has developed positive relationships with both staff members and the residents at Scarbrough Cottage.

“The staff members who work at Scarbrough cottage have an infinite amount of patience. Teen girls are a handful, and the girls at Scarbrough cottage have been so awesome. Regardless of what they have been through, they are still teenagers interested in most of the things I was into as a teenager. They have been so welcoming and have accepted me into their cottage family.”

In addition to volunteering at The Settlement Home, Lillian works as a database developer and keeps herself busy with her circle of friends. She enjoys playing on a weekly volleyball league, fostering kittens, having a weekly fantasy football watch party and remodeling her home. Lillian says that Settlement Home residents are not very different than other teenagers, and she thinks it is very special to be present for someone who is going through a hard time.
