AUSTIN – The Settlement Home for Children was named by Austin Woman Magazine as the Philanthropic Business of the Year at the Woman’s Way Business Awards Event on May 4 at the JW Marriott. The Settlement Home was selected for this honor because of the significant impact it makes in the community through financial support and volunteer services, in addition to demonstrating advocacy for women’s issues, generosity of spirit and a commitment to social impact.

Founded more than a century ago, The Settlement Home for Children is owned by a group of more than 400 women known as The Settlement Club. Darcie DeShazo, the executive director for The Settlement Home, says the organization’s mission is to promote healing and growth in children, young adults and families by providing them with a continuum of care, support and resources. The Home serves individuals who have experienced severe emotional trauma, abuse and neglect.

“We have evolved over the years to meet the needs of our community,” DeShazo said. “The Settlement Club women sit on the board of directors, organize our fundraising events and are very involved in the lives of the children we serve. It is a wonderful support and we would not exist without this group of very hard working, dedicated women.”

“Winning this award is such an honor to our organization, which started with 12 brave women in the Austin community. One hundred years later, here we are, serving young women.”

In order to provide the professional level of care required for healing, Club members and key staff raise more than $1.5 million of the more than $5 million budget each year through event fundraisers, grants and contributions.
