Volunteer Spotlight: The Settlement Club

You may already know about The Settlement Club, but you might not know all about their history and influence on The Settlement Home. Check out this great information about this impressive group of volunteers:

In 1916, twelve women set out to help children in need. This passion for taking care of children has continued for more than 100 years. What started as a small day care service for working mothers (in one rented room staffed entirely by volunteers) has evolved to meet the changing needs of the Austin community. Today, The Settlement Club is a group of more than 400 women who are committed to supporting The Settlement Home. The Settlement Club Board of Directors is made up of Settlement Club members who provide leadership and oversight to the organization.

There are many ways that Settlement Club members are involved with promoting the mission of The Settlement Home. They act as surrogate parents and advocates for our children in school; they host holiday celebrations and special events for the children and young adults at The Home; and they provide enrichment activities to the children throughout the year. This extraordinary group of women share their own resources and talents with our children, with employees and with each other, which fills their own lives with a sense of accomplishment, meaning and joy.

The Settlement Home’s primary contract is through the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services. We receive a fee for service from Child Protective Services, which is based on a daily reimbursement rate for each child based on level of care. We also have contracts with juvenile probation and post-adoption services.

Funding received from these contracts does not cover the full cost of care. The Settlement Club raises funds through large-scale fundraising events like The Annual Garage & Estate Sale and Shining Star Gala to provide financial stability to the operations of The Settlement Home and help bridge this funding gap. As a result, we are able to provide the highest quality of care to the deserving youth and families we serve. The 43rd Annual Garage & Estate Sale (The Sale) will take place in November. Last year’s Sale had a gross revenue of more than $1 million to support the programs and services of The Home.

We appreciate The Settlement Club and all their efforts to continue The Settlement Home’s impact!
